Celebrate Belize Independence Day
Belize celebrates Independence Day on September 21, commemorating independence from the United Kingdom in 1981. The holiday is a major celebration of Belizean culture, history and national pride at home and among Belizean communities abroad.
The Belize flag and its symbolism
The national flag has a royal-blue field with red bands at the top and bottom and the Belize coat of arms inside a white disc. The coat of arms reflects the country’s historical timber industry and is surrounded by fifty leaves, commemorating 1950 and the development of the nationalist movement.
Belizean identity across borders
Many Belizean families have connections to the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Mexico and other parts of Central America and the Caribbean. A combined flag can recognize both Belizean heritage and the country or community that forms the other side of a family story.
Ideas include Belize + USA, Belize + UK, Belize + Canada or Belize + Mexico.
